In light of the coronavirus epidemic, Apple today updated its support documents with new information on how to disinfect your devices safely. With coronavirus spreading like wildfire, knowing how to disinfect your device without damaging it is critical.
Apple previously did not recommend using any cleaners on its devices because of the harsh chemicals used in cleaning solutions. Particularly at risk were iPhone and iPad models, which have an oleophobic coating on their displays. Apple still cautions users about applying most cleaning solutions but confirms that disinfectant wipes are safe to use on the company’s devices.

Apple warns users to avoid getting any moisture into openings where it could damage internal components. If you have a spray cleaner, spray it onto a cloth, and then wipe the device. Do not spray directly on the device.
The Wall Street Journal tested Apple’s new guidelines with success. Reporter Joanna Sterns wiped a new iPhone 8 nearly 1100 times with Clorox disinfecting wipes. After a week of continuous wiping, the display remained unchanged.
Apple updated its support page in response to the coronavirus, which has killed thousands worldwide. To protect yourself and others, you should disinfect your device often, especially after using it in a public area.
